Darwin's Steps

Galapagos Cruise Expeditions

The Enchanted Islands

The Galapagos Islands, a remote archipelago approximately 600 miles (1,000 kilometers) off the coast of Ecuador, are a natural wonder celebrated for their unique wildlife and breathtaking landscapes. This UNESCO World Heritage Site gained fame through Charles Darwin’s studies that contributed to the theory of evolution. Visitors can experience up-close encounters with species found nowhere else on Earth, such as giant tortoises, marine iguanas, blue-footed boobies, and Galapagos penguins.

Beyond its remarkable biodiversity, the Galapagos offers stunning volcanic landscapes, pristine beaches, and crystal-clear waters ideal for snorkeling and diving. Activities range from guided wildlife tours and hiking to kayaking and exploring lava tunnels. The islands are committed to sustainable tourism, ensuring that their natural beauty and ecological significance are preserved for future generations.

Good to Know

Travelers to the Galapagos Islands must first enter Ecuador. Many nationalities, including citizens from the United States, Canada, the European Union, Australia, and New Zealand, do not require a visa for tourist stays up to 90 days in Ecuador. Ensure your passport is valid for at least six months beyond your intended departure date.

Upon arrival in the Galapagos, visitors are required to:

  • Purchase an INGALA Transit Control Card: This card costs around $20 USD and is obtained at the airport before departing for the islands.
  • Pay the Galapagos National Park Entrance Fee: A fee of $200 USD for foreign tourists is payable in cash upon arrival. This fee supports conservation and sustainable tourism efforts.

Always verify the latest visa and entry requirements with the Ecuadorian embassy or consulate in your country before traveling, as regulations can change

The Galapagos Islands experience a subtropical climate influenced by ocean currents, resulting in two main seasons:

  • Warm Season (December to May): Characterized by warm, sunny weather with occasional rain showers. Temperatures range from 70°F to 85°F (21°C to 29°C), and the ocean is warmer and clearer, making it ideal for snorkeling and diving.

Cool Season (June to November): Cooler temperatures between 65°F and 75°F (18°C to 24°C) with overcast skies and a light mist known as “garúa.” The seas are rougher, but this season is excellent for observing unique wildlife behaviors like mating rituals and nesting

The official currency of the Galapagos Islands is the United States Dollar (USD), as it is throughout Ecuador. It’s advisable to carry cash in small denominations, especially when visiting smaller islands or remote areas where ATMs are scarce. Credit cards are accepted in some hotels, restaurants, and shops in larger towns like Puerto Ayora, but smaller establishments often prefer cash

Spanish is the official language spoken in the Galapagos Islands. While English is understood in tourist areas, hotels, and by tour guides, learning a few basic Spanish phrases can enhance your interactions with locals and enrich your travel experience

The culture of the Galapagos is a blend of Ecuadorian traditions with a strong emphasis on conservation and sustainability. Locals are deeply connected to the natural environment and are committed to preserving the unique ecosystems of the islands. Visitors are encouraged to respect local customs, follow environmental guidelines, and engage with the community through eco-friendly practices

Before traveling, ensure your routine vaccinations are up to date. No special vaccinations are required for the Galapagos, but it’s wise to consult a healthcare provider. The islands are generally safe, but medical facilities are limited. It’s recommended to have comprehensive travel insurance that includes medical evacuation. Always use sunscreen and stay hydrated, as the equatorial sun can be intense. Drink bottled or purified water, as tap water is not safe for consumption

Access to the Galapagos Islands is via flight from mainland Ecuador, departing from Quito or Guayaquil to airports on Baltra Island or San Cristóbal Island. Once on the islands, transportation includes ferries, speedboats, and small aircraft to travel between islands. Many areas can only be accessed with a certified naturalist guide as part of organized tours, which often include transportation. Walking and hiking are common within the islands, offering close-up encounters with wildlife

Galapagos cuisine features fresh seafood like fish, lobster, and shrimp, often prepared with local ingredients and Ecuadorian flavors. Popular dishes include ceviche (seafood marinated in citrus juices), encebollado (fish soup), and grilled seafood platters. There are also international dining options in larger towns. Due to the remote location, food prices can be higher than on the mainland. Tap water is not safe to drink, so stick to bottled water and avoid ice in beverages unless you’re certain it’s from purified water
